How many people live in the shelter?

There are approximately 17-20 women and children in shelter at any time.

What should I bring?

In addition to personal items such as clothing, please bring any comfort items you/your children need (e.g. pillow, toy), medication, identification, and important documents.

How will I get there if I don’t have transportation?

Call us, we can help arrange a ride.

What happens when I arrive at the shelter?

You will be greeted by staff and given a tour. You will meet with a counsellor and make a plan for your first 24-48 hours in the shelter.

How long can I stay?

Length of stay varies from client to client. It is important to note that Cornerstone operates a short-term residential shelter program and is not a permanent housing option. We work with women and families to evaluate their needs, and assist them in becoming re-housed in a more permanent location.

Will I have to share a room?

Women with families will have their own bedrooms. Single women may have to share a room depending on space. Washrooms may be shared.

How much do your services cost?

Cornerstone offers women and families support through shelter, counselling and prevention programs. All services are offered at no cost to the individual receiving service. If a woman or family accesses the shelter program, food, shelter, laundry and personal hygiene products are all provided for free.

Will meals be provided?

A cook is on staff to prepare dinners and some other meals throughout the week. Women also have access to a shared kitchen to prepare all other meals and snacks themselves.

Do I have to stay in my room all day?

No, the shelter is a large building with a number of common areas including a toy room, several living rooms, dining room and kitchen, as well as a fenced yard with play equipment. Have a look.

Am I allowed to leave?

Yes, you are encouraged to continue with daily activities including appointments, going to school/work, and visiting friends and family.

Am I allowed to stay out overnight?

Yes, women can arrange to stay overnight with friends and family.

Where will I keep my belongings/valuables?

There will be storage available in your bedroom as well as a private locker with a key for your use.

What services will be available for me?

Counsellors are available 24 hours a day. You may also choose to have individual counselling sessions or join group workshops.

Can my children still go to school?

Yes.

Do you have supports for parents and children?

Yes, we have support staff on site for both mothers and their children.

 

How will I find a place to live?

Our staff will help you arrange financial support and find housing.

What do I do if I need clothing?

Cornerstone will assist you in obtaining clothing that you need

What supports are available after I leave the shelter?

We have a number of programs available if you want to stay connected with us after you leave the shelter.
