Nancy Johnston, Executive Director

Nancy has been working with Cornerstone since 1999, working at 3 different shelters before joining the Cornerstone team. She has worked in the violence against women sector for more than 30 years, and throughout her time with the Agency has held various roles including Residential Counsellor, Transitional Housing and Support Counsellor, and Manager of Residential Services. Nancy was hired into the role of Executive Director in July, 2015. As the Executive Director she leads the overall strategic direction of the agency and is accountable for all aspects of its management and operations. Specifically, this includes human resources, finance, programs, property, and fundraising. Reporting to the Board of Directors, Nancy works within the agency budget and policies, legislation requirements to ensure the long-term viability of the organization. Outside of Cornerstone Nancy is a member of Northumberland Sunrise Rotary. She enjoys, walking, reading, life-long learning, and spending time with family and friends. Born and raised in Toronto, Nancy moved to Northumberland County more than 20 years ago where she continues to reside with her family.

Wanda has been a fixture within Cornerstone’s agency structure since 1989. Beginning her time with the Agency fresh from graduating from Trent University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Wanda was a part-time residential counsellor. She then transitioned into administrative roles in 2003 after obtaining her payroll and accounting certification. From there Wanda progressed to become the Finance Officer in 2009, and settled into the Manager of Finance position in 2019. As the Manager of Finance, she oversees all of the organizations financial activity to ensure accountability of funds and compliance with policies and regulatory requirements. This includes budget planning and preparation, reporting for all grants and fundraising revenue, monitoring of banking, investments and expenses, payroll and benefit administration. When she isn’t crunching numbers and balancing the budget Wanda enjoys biking, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Wanda was married to her late husband Paul for 19 years, and together they had 6 children. Born and raised in Northumberland, and with her children out of the house, Wanda resides here with her two dogs, Spencer and Shilah.

 

Lucy Caldwell, Manager of Shelter Services

Lucy started with Cornerstone in 2013 as a relief residential counsellor. She has a Masters of Counselling Psychology from McGill University and applied her learned skills as she progressed from her Relief Residential Counsellor position to a Residential Counsellor, Transitional Support Counsellor, Child and Youth Community Counsellor, Family Court Support Worker, and Residential Team Lead before accepting the Manager of Shelter Services position in September 2020. As the Manager of Shelter Services, Lucy manages the day to day operations of the shelter program, providing oversight and support to shelter counsellors and program support staff. When she isn’t managing the shelter, or liaising with community partners, you can find Lucy on stage under the spotlights. A member of both the Safe Harbour Choir and Northumberland Players, Lucy loves singing, dancing and bringing local productions to life. Further to her work with Community Theater, Lucy resides in Northumberland County and volunteers her time with Sounds of the Next Generation and Ten Thousand Villages.

Christina joined the Cornerstone team in 2017. Christina has a Bachelor and Masters in Social Work from York University. She began her career as an Outreach Counsellor in a harm reduction services program, and has held various positions working within harm reduction, substance use and mental health programs – focusing on working collaboratively with community partners to develop and enhance programs and services for clients. Christina also has experience as an instructor at the College level, and has been a guest speaker in both College and University settings. Formerly the Manager of Shelter Services, Christina moved into the Manager of Community Services position in September 2020. In this role her main responsibilities are managing the Community Services team, helping to develop and administer programs, and working with partner agencies and community committees. Christina deeply enjoys her work supporting the workers within her team who provide individual and group counselling, housing and support services to women, children and families in Northumberland County. In her free time Christina enjoys spending time with her family, baking, cooking, and reading.

 

Cayne Fordham, Manager of Communications & Fundraising

Cayne joined the Cornerstone team in 2023. She previously studied at Western University, and attained a Masters of Media, Journalism, and Communications. She has completed training in media, communicating through extreme events, and advanced risk communications. Her experience includes event planning, media relations, copywriting, crisis communications, sponsorships, marketing, and internal and external communication strategies. Cayne has a passion for local positive impact and enjoys engaging with the community through different avenues, including community outreach projects and providing support to community initiatives through planning and coordinating committees.

Jane began with Cornerstone in 1992. Throughout her tenure with the Agency, Jane has held a number of different positions, including various management positions since 2004. She most recently moved into the Manager of Operations position in the fall of 2020. As the Manager of Operations, Jane is responsible for quality assurance, maintaining and developing systems to ensure established standards are achieved in a variety of areas including legislative and sector standards. Additionally, she has oversight of the physical plant to ensure smooth running and maintenance of the facilities. Jane appreciates that her time with Cornerstone has always allowed the opportunity for growth and advancement for both individual professional development, as well as for programs and services. This learning culture creates a work environment that Jane finds is never boring, always engaging, sometimes challenging, and often fun. When she isn’t enlisting help from her family to volunteer at Cornerstone, managing the latest construction project onsite, or preparing policies and procedures, Jane enjoys escaping into the wilderness to go back country camping, boating, and gardening. A resident of the community since 1992, Jane currently lives in Cobourg with her partner Paul, youngest son, and dog, Teddy.
